Celtic Cross constructed by Kelly Kerin from 1 3/4 thick poplar with Mahogany lacquer finish. 43" Tall Upper Cross - 20" diameter Lower Base Carving - 20 1/2" x 9 1/2" x 2 3/4" Floor Base - 24 1/2" x 7 1/2" x 1 3/4" This project was carved in tandem with a Celtic knotwork design chest (this will be covered eventually in this site). Both projects were constructed over a six week period that involved the actual woodworking construction by day and design drawing by night. This was a creative spree that involved two massive projects - both exhilarating and exhausting. The circular cross part of the piece was cut from 1 3/4" thick poplar using a Porter-Cable circle cutting jig and a Porter-Cable 693 plunge router. Cuts were made in sections and trimmed with a Bosch jig saw. The carving was freehand routed with a Porter-Cable 691 D-handled router.
The Porter Cable 1 1/2 HP 693 Plunge Router was used on the top part of the cross, cutting the circular sections.
This is all one piece and fits into the lower carved section by a tongue and groove joint. All routing cut freehand by Kelly Kerin. Another freehand router carved Celtic knotwork design graces the middle, cut with a Porter-Cable 691 D-Handle router.
The lower section, carved freehand, has classical Celtic knotwork, cut into a section of poplar measuring 20 1/2" x 9 1/2" x 2 3/4" thick. This section also fits into the lower step base by another tongue and groove joint.
Cross prior to finishing. (will eventually be covered under Woodworking - Finishing category).
